Belly Acres - RC Boats

My Radio Controlled Boat Collection

Back in the mid-1980's I built my first radio controlled boat. It was an 18" gas powered air-boat made from mahogany with a .049 glow-plug engine. Shortly after that I purchased a Dumas kit of the U.S.S Crocket. It took me nearly a year to complete. I still have the U.S.S. Crocket and the 'Lacey', an RC tugboat I built that same year. I've been hauling them around for over 25 years. All that's left of the Crocket  is the hull and part of the super structure. The tug is still intact, but needed some repairs and a paint job which is in progress now. In 2005, I ran across a great website for the Great Lakes Modeling Association that had detailed, step by step construction plans for building an 1:96 scale of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I was so impressed with the website that it sparked my interest in RC boats again. In late 2007 I began working on a 1:96 scale model of the Martha E. Allen completely built from scratch. The Martha E. Allen was a lake tanker built in 1928 at Lorain, Ohio for Lake Tankers Inc.. My grandfather Jack Carr was the steward on board her from 1941 to 1963.  The model construction is based on the original blueprints, some very good information from the GLMA website and Jeff Churill's "Big Fitz' project. The finished model will be almost 4 feet long and will be radio controlled with working lights, RADAR, a ballast tank cargo hold, running lights and much more detail. Here you can see some of the other boats I've built and follow the progress on the 'Fitz' and other Great Lakes boats I will be working on.
